What’s Your Cost of Living Post Pandemic?

As part or my role as Mortgage Broker and Financial Coach I regularly review expenditure with my clients and I’ve noticed some huge changes in the last 12 months, and I have some issues you may want to consider if you’re saving, planning for the future and / or thinking of  stretching your finances and looking for your dream home.

Most people I meet have managed to save money in lockdown, whether it’s their gym membership, their monthly train ticket, the cost of commuting, parking, buying lunch out etc. Of course our food bills have increased and even our wine intake – but generally most people have saved money.

One client this week has saved £800 per month for the last year and is busy looking for his dream home!  Which is great, but he has got used to saving that amount each month and is planning with that in mind. BUT when lockdown opens up – he’s going to have to factor in a £400 a month bill to get to work!

So I’ve been working through pre pandemic living costs and post pandemic living costs…. Have you? I think you’ll be shocked!

One client this morning said she’d received her water bill and their consumption had trebled and their monthly direct debit had doubled! More grown up children had returned to the roost, more cooking, more washing, showers, well more everything. The point is we don’t think about the simple, and invisible costs of lockdown living costs – but they all add up!

My advice, review your current cost of living! We’ve all been through massive change, and as we ease out of lockdown and want to celebrate being able to meet friends and family and bars, pubs and restaurants start opening up just be aware of how much and how often you are spending and whether it’s sustainable.
